Susan Wright is a spokesperson for the National Coalition of
Sexual Freedom (NCSF). Historically many from the O/p group have had run ins
with both her and that organisation, due to differences of opinion on hazy
topics such as CNC. In her enthusiasm to help legalise or decriminalise BDSM
she has had a nasty tendency to toss the O/p crowd under the bus, with all the
enthusiasm of a British bowler. Now personally one regards the NCSF with same
jaundiced eye as you do an unruly child in a supermarket; not really one's
problem except in passing.
The organisation is not represented in this country and she
is not our spokesperson for anything. In spite of this she still manages to
come across the feed via friends. Usually friends who are howling in rage and
frustration caused by her latest antics might one add. Everyone has a special
talent and hers seems to be putting her foot in it. The woman seems to have all
the finesse of a bull in a china shop.
Normally spokespeople for organisations have a certain amount
of tact or charm. Failing that they learn from their mistakes and get someone
to write their public missives. It saves on everyone's stress levels in the
end. They get to say what they mean in an unambiguous way, that isn't open to
misinterpretation that they then have to spend hours disavowing. It's a win win
situation :)
Unfortunately Ms Wright does not choose to take that option.
Subsequently her messages tend to come across as marginalising or worse, victim
blaming. Her latest offering on Fet is a fine example of this unfortunate ability
to turn a phrase; "Go to the cops" rather says it all. The screed of
text can be summed up as look at the good we do, all wrapped up in the
sentiment of we can't protect you if you don't report it.
Now that inability to protect people is not the issue...
well it is, but not for this. It's the unfortunate subtext that suggests that if
you don't report it and the predator goes on to create more traumas it's on you.
After all if you had just reported it then it would have stopped.
Yeah, because that has always worked so well for people...
Everyone supports the victim of crime...
And the police have a sterling track record for empathy and
understanding, as does the legal system...
Not to mention that the conviction rates that are so
encouraging
Sighs, moves past the child, grabs the tin of coffee off the
shelf and hastens to the exit...

Report it and if you don't further crimes are your fault.
Really. She believes that shit? Really?
She's never looked the conviction rates to which you refer then, has she.
*fume*
Obviously when you are an activist the world is much more black or white...
No room for messy greys or reality as others know it :(
Oh god it gets on my nerves so much... That kind of black/white attitude on behalf of an activist actually only serves to stomp all over their cause in my opinion.
I guess its the 'without love I'm an empty sounding bell' or whatever it is. (St Paul. Terrible old misogynist but did get round to some good ideas in the end)
They were all terrible misogynists, it doesn't stop some of their ideas being sound though :D
